The tradition is repeated every year. S. Joao in Porto, is a folk popular party that marks the birth of Saint John the Baptist, and takes place for a month, between May 30 and June 30.

However, is from the 23rd to the 24th that the festivities reach their heighest point. Thousands of people come out, with the traditional toy hammers, which they use to smack on the heads of the people passing by. Or else, they rub the smelly leeks on the face of inocents passaers-by.

The skies fill with fireworks and balloons. The music and dancing invade Porto’s neighbourhoods. On the windows sill people put pots with basil and popular poems. São João also brings out to the stress the smell of grilled sardines, green soup, bifanas (pork fillets) and other popular delicacies. It is the longest night of the year.

This year, on a City Hall iniciative, it will be celebrated the cration of one of the party’s symbols – the toy hammer. Invented in 1963, by Manuel António Boaventura, it is this peculiar object 50th birthday and, to mark the date, there will be produced toy hammers in their original form, that will be sold on the Tourism Posts, for 2 euros each.

The scheduling of S. João Party begins on May 30, with the Second edition of the festival Optimus Primavera Sound and ends on June 30, with the end of the Circuito da Boavista.

Through out June it is going to take place the tenth edition of Serralves em Festa (7 to 9 of June), the closing cerimony of FITEI – integrated on the Brazil in Portugal year, with the play “Sua Incelença, Ricardo II”, on D. João I square (9 and 10 of June); and moreover, the athletics competition, São João Race, on the 16th.

A tradição repete-se todos os anos. O S. João do Porto, festa popular que assinala o nascimento de S. João Baptista, realiza-se durante um mês, entre 30 de Maio e 30 de Junho.

No entanto, é de 23 para 24 de Junho que as festividades têm o seu ponto alto. Milhares de pessoas saem à rua, empunhando os tradicionais martelinhos, com os quais batem na cabeça de quem passa. Ou então, esfregam o “mal-cheiroso” alho-porro na cara dos transeuntes. 

Os céus enchem-se de fogo-de-artifício e balões. A música e os bailaricos invadem os bairros portuenses. Nas janelas das casas colocam-se os vasos de manjericos, com quadras populares. O São João traz também para a rua o cheiro a sardinha assada, caldo verde, bifanas e outras iguarias populares. É a noite mais longa do ano.

Este ano, numa iniciativa da Câmara Municipal do Porto, será comemorada a criação de um dos símbolos desta Festa - o martelinho. Inventado em 1963, por Manuel António Boaventura, este peculiar objeto faz 50 anos e, para assinalar a data, serão produzidos martelinhos no formato original, que serão colocados à venda nos Postos de Turismo, a 2 euros cada.

A programação da Festa de S. João tem início a 30 de Maio, com a II Edição do festival Optimus Primavera Sound e termina a 30 de Junho, com a realização do Circuito da Boavista.

Durante o mês do Junho vão decorrer ainda a 10.ª edição do Serralves em Festa (7 a 9 Junho), o espectáculo de encerramento do FITEI – integrado no Ano do Brasil em Portugal, com a peça Sua Incelença, Ricardo III, na Praça D. João I (9 e 10 Junho); e ainda a prova de atletismo Corrida de São João do Porto, no dia 16.
